The case of secondary shyness, which is brought on by a situation such as a chronic blushing problem, is very different than shyness as a personality trait. This type of shyness can actually be a defense mechanism against issues that the individual perceives to be embarrassing. Those who blush excessively are humiliated by their facial reddening and tends to avoid social situations and lose self-esteem and self-confidence. For those who are aware, the only effective and fast way to stop blushing from going to its excessive levels is to undergo surgery or ETS (Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy). It is actually very effective but the effects are frightening. ETS actually affects nerves. The procedure either uses clamping off or cutting the nerves involved in the blushing reaction. This is a deliberate action to damage nerves as a medical procedure to cure excessive blushing and it is something that should not be taken lightly, even if excessive blushing is a real problem.
